2nd Royal West Surrey (Queens) were in South Africa when the war broke out but by 19th September, 1914, they had reached Southampton and became part of 22 Brigade, 7th Division. In October, 7th Division went to Belgium and by the middle of the month were in position to the north-west of Ypres just as the German onslaught on that city began. For the next month the fighting was ferocious and although they held the line and helped prevent the enemy from taking Ypres, 7th Division lost over half of its officers and men either killed, wounded or captured. It is not known when it was during this struggle that Seth Spooner was wounded but afterwards he was evacuated back to England where he died from his wounds on 5th November.
